      Considering a career change? Looking for part time work? Retired and need extra income? How about joining the team of transportation professionals at your local school district? That's right, local school districts are looking for school bus drivers and this is your chance to receive the training at Shasta College. If this sounds interesting to you, sign up for this 6-week course "Beginning School Bus Driver".

Subject matter covered:

  • Defensive Driving & Specialized Defensive Driving

  • Emergency Procedures
  • Pupil Management
  • Field Trips
  • The Exceptional Child
  • Driver Public Relations

    Students will be able to pass the necessary written examinations given by DMV and CHP to begin the Behind-The-Wheel training process to obtain their commercial driver license and special driver certificate to drive a school bus. AND

  • List and interpret the laws associated with being a school bus driver
  • Exhibit the proper pre-trip check-off procedure
  • Synthesize techniques of group interaction and student discipline
  • Assess proposals dealing with loading/unloading, technical aspects of driving and emergency situations

    What you need to know to become a school bus driver - 'Original Applicant' to drive a school bus:

  • Minimum 20 Hours Classroom (Shasta College)
  • Minimum 20 Hours Behind-the-wheel Instruction (Usually sponsored by school districts)
  • Class C CA license, Class B permit (pass DMV written commercial test $64.00)
  • Pass DMV passenger endorsement test (and applicable air brakes test)
  • Clean DMV driving record, H-6 10 year history DMV printout ($5.00)
  • DMV Physical exam current within 2 years of application (DL-51) ($50-$75)
  • CHP fingerprint scan
  • Clean criminal history Department of Justice w/7-year CA residency or FBI
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screen (borne out by hiring school district)
  • Pass CHP written exam laws and regulations ($67.00 includes DOJ/FBI Check)
  • Pass CHP written first aid exam or waive with current first aid card
  • Pass CHP behind-the-wheel exam w/pre-trip inspection exam
